NAIROBI,Devastating floods during Kenya’s rainy season, aggravated by climate change, have killed at least 38 people and displaced thousands as rivers burst their banks and inundated low-income neighborhoods.
Communities that typically emerge on the outskirts of major towns and cities when people build and occupy homes on land they do not own. Though informal settlements vary widely, they generally: Lack basic services and infrastructure.
Various areas that usually experiences floods in Western Kenya, - Homa Bay, Siaya, Busia, Nyando, Nyakach and Muhoroni -, low lying areas in Narok, Kajiado and Mombasa. Hilly areas traditionally prone to mudslides particularly in Makueni, Nyeri, Muranga and West Pokot Counties.
Venant Ndighila, the emergency response manager of the Kenya Red Cross, said 38 deaths and 11,275 displaced people have been reported across the country. He warned about accompanying risks, including disease outbreaks and the disruption of goods and services.
