To examine the causes and factors influencing the activities of illegal mining in Ghana, the research used five influential factors which are in line with literature: High Unemployment, high dependency rate, Poverty, Mining Mismanagement (Laws), and High Illiteracy.
❖ The Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) infers that an illegal miner is anyone who engages in any form of mining without the required mineral right.
The Western North Regional Small-Scale Miners Association has intensified its efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities.
Illegal small-scale mining in Ghana has been a major contributor to deforestation, polluting the water, air, and soil, and devastating farmlands. It has also contributed to serious health challenges and an increased number of school dropouts in mining communities, posing challenges to sustainable development.
The Small Scale Miners Association has voiced deep concerns over the increasing involvement of illegal miners in river mining across Ghana.
In a coordinated operation led by the association’s task force, mining equipment, including canoes, and changfans have been set ablaze along various rivers in the region.
The action, aimed at protecting water bodies from further destruction, comes amidst growing concerns over the increasing levels of pollution and siltation caused by illegal mining.
Local communities have long suffered from contaminated water sources, which has not only affected access to potable water but also threatened aquatic life.
