GLOBAL MARCH AND GAZA SOLIDARITY CONVOY INITIALLY CALLED OFF; EGYPT AND LIBYA BLOCK ACTIVISTS.

Both the Maghrebian Al-Soumoud convoy and the Global March to Gaza have been forced to suspend operations after facing severe crackdowns by authorities in Egypt and eastern Libya. The Al-Soumoud delegation, which set off from Tunisia with over 1,500 activists aiming to reach Rafah, was blocked near Sirte by forces under Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar.

Participants were detained, split up, denied aid and movement, and subjected to harassment. Thirteen remain in custody. Organizers say the decision to halt the mission came after days of intimidation and pressure reportedly triggered by Cairo’s request to prevent the caravan’s advance.

At the same time in Egypt, the Global March to Gaza — made up of over 4,000 activists from 80+ countries was dismantled following detentions, deportations, and assaults. One coordinator, Spanish Palestinian Saif Abukeshek, remains missing after being reportedly abducted and beaten by plainclothes officers in Cairo.

The group has since suspended its activities and ordered all participants to leave Egypt. Organizers say they were left with no choice after embassies offered mixed responses and Egyptian authorities continued targeting marchers despite public commitments to coordination.
