Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in efforts to strengthen Russia’s relationship with the region.

President Putin met with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to discuss energy cooperation, the conflict in the Middle East and other issues.

He has suggested Russia could be a mediator in the Middle East, due to the nation’s connections with Israel and Palestinians, the AP reports.

Putin is set to continue his efforts to boost Russia’s profile in the region by hosting Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in the Kremlin on Thursday Dec. 7.
