The largest typhoon to hit Taiwan in 30 years has made landfall in the country’s southeast, bringing heavy rain and power cuts and prompting mass evacuations.
Typhoon Kong-rey arrived at 1:40 p.m. local time in Taitung, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. At one point a super typhoon, Kong-rey weakened slightly overnight but was still equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane. With a storm radius of nearly 200 miles — spanning almost the length of Taiwan — Kong-rey is sweeping east to west, with its effects to be felt across the whole island.
