A Professional Study led by Professor Andy Tomkins at Monash University reveals that Earth might have had a ring system like Saturn’s about 466 million years ago. This ancient ring could have caused more meteorites to hit Earth and may have even started an ice age during the Ordovician period.
The researchers discovered 21 asteroid impact craters near the equator from that time, which doesn’t match typical patterns. They also found a lot of meteorite debris in sedimentary rocks, showing Earth was hit by space material over a long period.
The material from this ring likely fell to Earth over millions of years, affecting the planet’s geology and climate. The ring’s shadow might have cooled the Earth, possibly leading to the Hirnantian ice age, one of the coldest times in the last 500 million years.
