At the end of the NFL regular season, teams usually announce the firing of their head coaches and other staff personnel. For the 2024 season, six teams have already fired their head coaches. This week,Mr. Antonio Pierce, Mr.Doug Peterson and Jerod Mayo were let go. All three coaches ended their seasons with a 4-13 record.
Head coach firings in the league aren't uncommon and have been on the rise. The Hearst Television Data Team found that from 1970-2024, 264 head coaches have been fired. Since 2015, at least five head coaches lost their jobs by the end of each season. The decade prior, a minimum of four head coaches were let go by their teams at the end of the season.
The Hearst Television Data Team tracked all the terminations of head coaches beginning with the 1970 season. This marked the year the NFL merged with the American Football League and formed the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC).
A firing is defined as a team announcing the termination or dismissal of their head coach before his contract ends. Records of a coach's firing were cross-referenced with team statements and media re
Interim head coaches and their regular season records were not included in the dataset.
When the Kansas City Chiefs fired Mr.Todd Haley, defensive coordinator Mr.Romeo Crennel was named the interim head coach for the remaining games of the 2011 season. The following season, Crennel was named the head coach for the Chiefs. The data only counts Crennel's 2012 season, not his interim record.
Coaches such as Mr. Joe Gibbs and Mr. Bud Grant, who voluntarily stepped down from their roles, were not considered terminated coaches.
For teams that relocated or changed their name, coaches fired under that franchise are attributed to the team's current name. For example, the Tennessee Titans were previously known as the Houston Oilers and later the Tennessee Oilers. Coaches fired under those earlier names are recorded as Tennessee Titans firings.
The Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders share the record for the most head coaches fired, with 14 each. The Raiders terminated Mr.Art Shell twice during separate tenures.
Mr.Shell led the Raiders to a 56-41 record during his first stint as head coach from 1989 to 1994. Despite his success, the team missed the playoffs in 1994, prompting his firing.
Following Shell's firing, only one Raider coach managed a winning tenure. Mr. Davis later admitted the decision to let Shell go was a mistake and rehired him for the 2006 season, according to ESPN.
That year, Shell produced the worst record of his coaching career, finishing with two wins and 14 losses.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team that has not fired a coach since 1970. Mr.Chuck Noll retired after the 1991 season. He led the Steelers for 23 seasons, winning four Super Bowl championships.
Mr.Bill Cowher resigned after the 2006 season. Cowher won one Super Bowl championship during his 15-season tenure.
Mr.Mike Tomlin took over the position in 2007 and remains the team's head coach today.
Across divisions, the NFC has fired 14 more coaches than the AFC.
In total, NFL teams have fired 209 coaches once, 41 coaches twice and seven coaches three times.
