Tired of the tourist crowds in Barcelona? Focus your efforts instead on the Costa Brava, farther up the Catalonian coast, especially the idyllic beach village of Llafranc.

Spain is one of the most visited countries on earth and also has a large permanent and seasonal expatriate population along it Mediterranean coasts. Local Spaniards who cater to the visitors and expatriates would most probably not hold them to the same norms of behavior as amongst themselves.

If you like hanging out at the beach and partying, then yes. That’s what the Costa Brava is about, certainly in the summer. Places like Lloret de Mar and Blanes are filled with mostly youth looking for a great time.
In the winter, there ain’t much to do. That’s when the locals clean up the mess from the summer and prepare it for next summer. It’s too cold and the crowds stay away.

If you like hanging out at the beach and partying, then yes. That’s what the Costa Brava is about, Potentially,in the summer.

However, if you wish to “fit in” with local communities away from tourist zones, just follow the same basic etiquette and respectful behavior as anywhere else:

  1. Always greet people and shopkeepers upon entry, and, if not disturbing them, upon leaving.
  2. Always let everyone be seated at the table before eating; if you are in a small group with a host, wait for the host to start eating unless he invites you to begin beforehand.
  3. When you are in a social setting, put your cellphone on “meeting” or even “airplane” mode. The company of people next to you takes precedence over all others, unless you expect some job or life-changing communication (i.e. very rarely)
  4. Don’t have any preconceptions other than people can speak Spanish (and even them, don’t insist upon that point in Catalonia; they can speak Spanish but regard Catalan as their first language)
  5. Don’t spend all your time researching what to do or where to go, or, especially if you can speak some Spanish, spend all your social time with foreigners.
  6. Do dress respectfully i.e. not Ă  la Kardashian in churches; tank-tops and sweats are for exercise only.
  7. Don’t get plastered drunk. You may get tipsy but the flat out drunkenness as seen in Northern Europe is regarded as very unseemly.
