The French Riviera resort town brims with the unexpected, including a wealth of prehistory, ancient ruins and newer attractions.
The largest city in the region is Nice which is home to a stunning beach, amazing restaurants, and sensational shopping. The French Riviera resort town brims with the unexpected, including a wealth of prehistory, ancient ruins and newer attractions.

Stretching for 7 kilometres, the Promenade des Anglais is Nice's most well-known attraction. This wide paved walkway gets its name from the English aristocrats who spent their holidays in Nice during the 1800s.

Traveling around the Riviera by train is a viable option as most of the coastal towns have a stop. That is not the case for inland towns, however. The train is called the TER (Express Regional Train) and in high season it can be a much better option than buses as you won't get stuck in heavy traffic.

You might be wondering how many days you need to spend in Nice to really experience all it has to offer. For a simple exploration of Nice,
3 days is the perfect amount of time. This allows you to experience the city's main attractions, eat the best local dishes, and soak up the atmosphere without feeling rushed.

The best Nice foods are often healthy dishes made with fresh Provencal vegetables, herbs, and olive oil. You'll be able to taste Ratatouille and Niçoise salad, the world-famous dishes originating from Nice. The local cuisine has many other treats to surprise you, too.

Overall,  the months of
April-May and September-October are the best months to visit the French Riviera. In particular, September is a fantastic time, as the sea is still warm enough for swimming, crowds are high but not crazy, and you also get the other perks of shoulder season.
