In the past four years, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have made the decision to immigrate to the United States, with more arriving at the U.S. border than at any other point since the socialist government of Hugo Chávez was sworn into power in 1999.
Many Venezuelans had seen their lives further deteriorate under the autocratic rule of Chávez’s successor, Nicolás Maduro.
U.S. immigration officials allowed many Venezuelans to stay while their asylum claims were heard in court.
Later, they expelled thousands to Mexico, while also offering new legal pathways to enter. Strained relations between the U.S. and Venezuela meant sending people back home was almost never an option.
