Sami Zayn is embraced by his family before he heads to the ring. Chad Gable comes up to him next and tells Zayn that he won't accompany the challenger ringside despite the weeks-long training in preparation for Gunther. And before he reaches the entrance, Zayn gets a hug and some motivational words from Kevin Owens. If Zayn needs motivation for this match, he has all the sources to find it.
Out next is a very confident Gunther. His Imperium mates do not follow him to the ring.
Zayn kicks out at a 2-count following a Gunther powerbomb, then counters a move into a Helluva Kick. Gunther kicks out at 2, then twice powerbombs Zayn for another 2-count.
Gunther then barks trash talk to Zayn's wife sitting ringside as Zayn takes more offense. Another powerbomb by Gunther in between discussions with Zayn's wife, followed by back-to-back top-rope splashes.
But Zayn digs in, reverses a third splash, does a brainbuster off the top rope and rattles off two Helluva kicks to earn the pinfall victory in about 16 minutes.
Gunther's reign of more than a year as Intercontinental Champion is over. Michael Cole calls it one of the biggest upsets of the last decade. Not sure where it would land, but the crowd definitely popped at the 3-count. Zayn and his wife embrace at ringside.
Zayn strategizes an incredible tactis to win his WrestleMania moment alongside his good friend Kevin Owens last year. This year, he earns his biggest singles victory in quite sometime, if not ever.
