•Protester Shot in Nairobi as Outrage Over Albert Ojwang’s Death Boils Over.
One man was shot during protests in Nairobi yesterday, which demonstrators demanded justice for 31-year-old teacher, activist, and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody earlier this month. A video shared widely online shows the man — reportedly a street vendor who was selling face masks to protestors — being struck repeatedly by two police officers before one opens fire as he tries to walk away.
He collapsed to the ground as bystanders shouted, “You have killed him.” A police statement says the officer involved in the shooting has been arrested and the man is receiving medical attention.
The protests, which began peacefully, were quickly disrupted by tear gas and groups of club-wielding men on motorbikes, who attacked crowds while police stood byby
Amnesty International and civil society groups accused security forces of enabling the violence and escalating a pattern of extrajudicial killings. Ojwang’s death — initially ruled a suicide but later shown by autopsy to be the result of assault ;has reignited public anger just days before the anniversary of Kenya’s Gen Z protests.
Activists are calling for the arrest and removal of Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat, whose complaint allegedly led to Ojwang’s fatal arrest. Lagat stepped aside from his position on Monday as the investigation continues.
