Queer Taipei residents often refer to the last weekend of October as “gay Christmas” because Halloween and Pride happen at the same time. The parade is the largest of its kind in East Asia, attracting hundreds of thousands of people from around the world.
This year’s celebration marks five years since Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.
Artist Ya Wen Li, 33, attended Taiwan’s 22nd annual parade Saturday to capture the spirit of the celebration and reflect on what LGBTQ life on the island means to her on this anniversary.
