BERLIN — Mr.Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany’s conservative Christian Democratic Union, is poised to become the country’s next chancellor, with preliminary results showing his party — and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union and initially winning a plurality in parliament after a vote on Sunday.
In blunt remarks, Mr.Merz warned about changing relations with Germany’s longtime ally the United States under President Donald Trump. “It is an absolute priority to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that we achieve independence from the U.S., step by step,” he told public broadcaster ARD.
