In 1997, nearly five million Lego pieces plunged into the sea when a rogue wave hit the Tokio Express, a cargo ship hauling toys and other goods.
The ship nearly capsized, causing it to lose all 62 of its shipping containers — an event known as the Great Lego Spill. Lego pieces are still showing up today— on England’s coast, in Ireland, Belgium, France, and possibly at the beach near you.
